1. Move the front seat(s) to center position and the affected door glass completely down. 2. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. For additional information, refer to section 414-01: battery, mounting and cables general procedures “battery disconnect”. 3. Lower the glove compartment by depressing the locking tabs, and disconnect the passenger air bag module electrical connector and connect the special tool (# 418-f468) to the instrument panel harness side of the passenger air bag module electrical connector. 4. Lower the driver air bag connector access cover on steering wheel and disconnect the driver air bag module electrical connector. Connect the special tool (# 418-f468) to the steering column harness side of the driver air bag module electrical connector. Vehicles equipped with side air bags:

Dashboard / instrument panel: service and repair removal and installation note: removal and installation of the instrument panel is best accomplished by two people. Wiring and circuit protection for routing and connection locations. Removal and installation 1. Position front wheels in the straight ahead position. 2. Disconnect positive battery cable. 3. Remove cluster finish panel, please refer to body and frame/interior trim/dash board/service and repair/ see: 4. 5. 6. 7. Disconnect all electrical connections from steering column switches. Remove two bolts and reinforcement from under steering column. Disengage insulator retainer and remove insulator. Remove four nuts and absorber assembly from under steering column. Caution: do not rotate steering column shaft. 8. Disconnect park brake release cable and wiring connector from park brake and ignition switch wiring connector. 9. Remove four nuts retaining steering column to support, disconnect prndl cable (column shift) and lower column on front seat. Cover front seat to protect from damage. 10. Install lock cylinder to ensure that steering column shaft does not turn.

The emission maintenance warning “emw” module operates a light that is located on the instrument panel. For 1985-87 model year vehicles, the light will display the word “emissions”. For 1988-89 model year vehicles, the light will display the words “check engine”. When the light is lit, it is indicating that the 60,000 mile emission maintenance should be performed. After the maintenance is performed the emw module must be reset to zero time. Another type of module is the “ims” module. This module is not part of the light circuit and does not require maintenance. At a predetermined time, the ims module directs the eec iv processor to make a strategy change. A third type of module is the “combo” module. This module combines the functions of the ims and the emw modules. Heater core removal 1. Remove instrument panel and lay it on the front seat. Refer to instrument panel, gauges and warning indicators. See: instrument panel, gauges and warning indicators\instrument cluster / carrier\service and repair 2. Partially drain the cooling system. 3. Remove a/c evaporator housing assembly. Refer to evaporator case. See: evaporator case\service and repair 4. Remove four heater core access cover retaining screws, and remove the access cover from the a/c evaporator housing. 5. Remove the tube gasket from the heater core tubes. 6. Slide heater core and seals from the a/c evaporator housing. Installation 1. Install the heater core in the a / c evaporator housing with the tube gasket on the outside of the case. 2 position the heater core cover on the a / c evaporator housing. Install the four retaining screws. 3. Install a/c evaporator housing assembly into vehicle. Refer to evaporator case. 4. Refill the cooling system.

Steering column zoom special tool(s) removal and installation 1. Turn the steering wheel to the straight-ahead position and turn the ignition switch to the off position. Note: if removing the steering wheel or steering column, carry out steps 2 and 3 before starting the removal procedure. If removing the steering column shaft, proceed to item 8 of the removal procedure. 2. Warning: to reduce the risk of serious personal injury, read and follow all warnings, cautions and notes in the deactivation procedure.
