Dashboard / instrument panel: service and repair removal and installation note: removal and installation of the instrument panel is best accomplished by two people. Wiring and circuit protection for routing and connection locations. Removal and installation 1. Position front wheels in the straight ahead position. 2. Disconnect positive battery cable. 3. Remove cluster finish panel, please refer to body and frame/interior trim/dash board/service and repair/ see: 4. 5. 6. 7. Disconnect all electrical connections from steering column switches. Remove two bolts and reinforcement from under steering column. Disengage insulator retainer and remove insulator. Remove four nuts and absorber assembly from under steering column. Caution: do not rotate steering column shaft. 8. Disconnect park brake release cable and wiring connector from park brake and ignition switch wiring connector. 9. Remove four nuts retaining steering column to support, disconnect prndl cable (column shift) and lower column on front seat. Cover front seat to protect from damage. 10. Install lock cylinder to ensure that steering column shaft does not turn.

Service procedure 1. Remove the steering column opening cover. A. Remove the four (4) screws and lower the panel. B. Loosen the nut and disconnect the hood release handle. C. Disconnect the data link connector. 2. Disconnect the clutch pedal position switch (cpp) and the stoplight switch electrical connectors. 3. Remove and discard the clutch pedal return spring. (figure 1) 4. Install a new clutch pedal return spring by first attaching the bottom of the spring in securing hole, then using a narrow tipped regular screwdriver, pry up on the top of the spring while pulling up on the clutch pedal attach spring to pedal. (refer to figure 1 for spring orientation) 5. Connect the cpp and the stoplight switch electrical connectors. 6. Install the steering column opening cover. A. Connect the data link connector. B. Connect the hood release handle and tighten the nut. C. Install the panel and install the four (4) screws.

Some 2002-2005 explorer 4dr/mountaineer vehicles, may require a greater effort to move the gear selector lever (shift lever) from drive to park. This may be due to a time delay with the brake shift interlock (bsi) pin retraction. Action to service, replace the bsI switch. Refer to the following service procedure. Service procedure 1. Remove the two (2) fasteners supporting the instrument panel knee bolster from below the steering column and remove the cover (figure 1). 2. Remove the three (3) fasteners supporting the steering column lower shroud and remove the cover (figure 2). 3. Remove the three (3) wiring bundle carrier fasteners from the bottom of the steering column to allow movement while removing the bsI switch. It may be necessary to release the connectors from the multifunction switch (figure 3). 4. Remove the bsI fasteners (1-30 on the side and 1-20 on the bottom) (figure 4). 5. Pull the bsI tab on the bottom of the column downward to help free the bsI from the column housing. 6. Break the two (2) side tabs off the bsI by the white wiring connector (figure 5).

1. Record the radio stations and disconnect the battery ground cable. Note: steps 2 and 3 do not apply to villager. Go to step 4. 2. Turn the ignition switch lock cylinder to the run position. Then, push the ignition switch lock cylinder release tab with a punch while pulling out the ignition switch lock cylinder. 3. Remove the tilt wheel handle by turning the handle counterclockwise (if equipped). 4. Remove the upper to lower steering column shroud retaining screws and remove the shrouds. 5. Remove the two (2) multifunction switch retaining screws and disconnect the electrical connectors. See figure 1. 6. Inspect the multifunction switch electrical connector pins to make sure they are not loose or pushed out in the connectors. See figure 2. 7. Connect the new multifunction switch, making sure the electrical connectors snap into place and are fully seated. 8. Install the new switch. Tighten the screws to 3 nm (27 lb-in).

1. Warning: to avoid accidental deployment and possible injury, the backup power supply must be depleted before servicing or replacing any air bag system components. To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the battery to starter relay cable and wait one minute. Note: make sure the front wheels (1007) are in the straight-ahead position. Remove the battery cables. 1. Remove the battery ground cable (14301). 2. Remove the battery to starter relay cable (14300) and wait one minute for the backup power supply to be depleted. 2. Remove the driver side air bag module (043b13). 1. Remove the two back cover plugs. 2. Remove the screws. 3. Disconnect the horn electrical connector. 4. Disconnect the air bag sliding contact electrical connector. 5. Remove the driver side air bag module.
